Ringing in the new year with Asian Kung-fu Generation

31 12 2008

Everyone ready for the new year? Hope all had a good christmas, happy new year guys. It’s been a while since I posted some good ass indie rock so now I’ll be sharing Asian Kung-fu Generation, one of the most popular indie bands to emerge on the scene in Japan. Their popularity has been boosted thanks to the use of their songs in some anime (Full metal alchemist and bleach I do believe). If I’m being honest I didn’t really like them at first but now they’ve started to grow on me… they’ll never be able to top the mighty Base Ball Bear in my opinion though! Anyway, enjoy!

Namba – shopping paradise in Osaka

16 12 2008

Following on from my post about Umeda, I’ll now talk about Namba, Osaka’s main shopping and entertainment district, located in the south of the city. Namba is home to most of the major stores that you’ll find in any large city (for example Tsutaya, Book-off, Tower Records etc.) There are various large shopping malls and department stores dotted around the area, as well as an underground shopping mall (For some reason in the Kansai region, especially in Osaka, underground shopping malls are very popular. I really don’t know why they’re so common in Kansai, I think I found just one in Kanto but there are loads in Kansai!) The most famous area of Osaka is located here- Dotonbori. Along Dotonbori you’ll find the famous Glico man and there also used to be some drummer doll which was used by a store. Whilst I was there the store that used the drummer had closed down and as a result it’s no longer possible to see the drummer dude anymore. Ah well…You can still actually buy his key-ring at some of the souvenir stores there!

Very close to Namba is Shinsaibashi, which is probably my favourite area of Osaka. Running down Shinsaibashi is a traditional Japanese style shopping arcade but it’s pretty chic and hip compared with others that you might come across in Japan. Maybe it’s best described as the Harajuku of Osaka, although most of the fashion isn’t really as extreme as what you might find in Harajuku. Anyway, I seem to be rambling now, check out the pics, I really should have taken more. Oh yeah and also near Shinsaibashi is another popular area called Amerika Mura (Amemura for short, otherwise meaning America village. Over here you’ll find tons of clothes stores, actually this is also very much like Harajuku). Anyway, time for the pics!

Perfume take over the airwaves

16 12 2008

While I was in Japan there was one group which constantly appeared on TV shows for interviews, their music was always featured in TV advertising and was on in just about every store you’d walk into. That group was Perfume and I totally despised them. Fast forward a few months and now back in England… they’ve grown on me!! I don’t believe it but after hearing their music over here it provided a kind of nostalgic feeling (well, mostly a longing to get back to Japan as soon as possible!!) Their ultra sugarcoated electro j-pop tunes are just too damn catchy. Here are the 2 songs that I like most… damn j-pop,  there’s no escaping it!!

Shin Umeda City

13 12 2008

Shin Umeda City is located in the north of Osaka (Umeda is the main business district in the north of Osaka), and is home to the famous ’sky building.’ The sky building is home to an observation deck which seems to be popular with the tourists, I didn’t actually go up myself but the area became one of my favourite places in Osaka. I stayed in Osaka for one month, and I found that this area was a great place to chill and relax during the evening- of course you’ll see many couples cuddling if you go around this time!! If you’re wondering about the south of Osaka, the main area located there is Namba, which is more of an entertainment area. There are many shops in Umeda but I personally found that Namba is more interesting in general. Anyway, I’ll upload pictures of Nanba later so check back for those but for now, enjoy these ones!

13 12 2008

Here’s a photo which I took from the Big Site area of Odaiba, I put up a similar one aaaaaaages ago but I think this one was better. The photo is a bit crooked, I didn’t have my tripod so I had to lean the camera on top of the railing :S Anyway, enjoy.
