Exploring fragments of Japanese history in Nara

20 02 2009

If you’re visiting the Kansai region of Japan then it’d be well worthing visiting Nara. Located conveniently near Kyoto and Osaka, Nara is home to various important historical temples and shrines and was once the capital of Japan when Buddhism started to flourish. Most of the famous sites are located in Nara Park, which is not very far from Nara station. There you’ll find a daibutsu, a big statue of Buddha.  Nara Park is also home to a shitload of free roaming deer, nope I’m not exaggerrating, there are loads of em! If it takes your fancy you can even buy crackers to feed them! There is also a special event which happens in Nara park in August where thousands of candles are lit, illuminating the grounds at night. It’s worth checking out if you visit around that time, unfortunately it happened literally a few days after I left Kansai though!

Japanese bands

18 02 2009

Yo guys, I assure you I’ll be posting regularly from now on…. don’t believe me? ah well, you’ll see!! :P I’ve been finding out about many different Japanese bands since I returned from Japan. I am actually returning to Japan this summer, so I’m planning on buying a whole load of CDs which aren’t available in England. For now, check out these 3 bands ;)

プリングミン (Plingmin)
Plingmin seem to be a relatively new band on the scene but they certainly seem to be picking up a good following in Japan since one of their songs has been used in the popular anime Gintama. Check ‘em out!:

ヒ (he)

Turns out I had actually listened to their CD in Japan, but I unfortunately forgot about them shortly after. Recently I had just discovered their music video on Youtube and realised that I had heard their music in Japan. Really worthy checking out, definitely gonna buy their CD and even try to go to their show if they are playing when I’m back in Tokyo.

Unchain

This band was a recommendation by a Japanese blogging friend and they don’t disappoint, will have to get around to checking out more of their music soon!

Ok ok, it’s been ages since I’ve posted, unfortunately I’ve been struggling trying to keep up with the huge workload my uni has been tormenting me with.. ok slight exagerration but I do have a lot of work! lol Anyway, I only just realised that considering I’m studying Japanese it would be beneficial for me to blog in Japanese…. which led to the creation of Gaijin No Sekai… the Japanese version!! For those who can read Japanese please check it out here: Japanese Gaijin no Sekai blog
I have no intention of stopping blogging on this site though, I will try and post more frequently so be sure to check back soon ;)
